Why Your Gel Polish Isn't Lasting & How to Fix It

There's nothing more frustrating than a gel manicure that starts lifting, peeling, or chipping within a week. Gel polish is supposed to last two to three weeks — so if yours isn't making it past day five, something in your process needs fixing. The good news: most premature gel polish failure has a clear cause and a straightforward solution.

Problem 1: Gel Nails Peeling from the Cuticle

Cause: Gel polish applied too close to or touching the skin/cuticle. When gel cures on skin, it doesn't bond and will lift — pulling the rest of the polish with it.

Fix: Leave a tiny gap (about 0.5mm) between the gel and your cuticle. Push cuticles back properly before application. If any gel floods onto skin during application, remove it with an orange stick before curing. Never cure gel that's touching the skin.

Problem 2: Lifting at the Tips

Cause: Not capping the free edge. The tip of the nail is the most vulnerable point — if it's left unsealed, moisture and knocks will work their way under the gel from the edge.

Fix: Cap every layer — base coat, colour coats, and top coat. Run the brush horizontally along the very tip of the nail to seal it fully. This single habit makes a noticeable difference to how long gel nails last.

Problem 3: Gel Polish Not Lasting More Than a Week

Cause: Insufficient surface prep. Gel needs a clean, slightly roughened, oil-free surface to bond to. If the nail is smooth, shiny, or oily, the gel has nothing to grip.

Fix:

  • Lightly buff the nail surface to remove shine.
  • Wipe each nail with Chroma Gel Gel Cleanser on a lint-free wipe immediately before applying gel.
  • Don't touch the nail surface after cleansing — skin oils transfer instantly.
  • Apply Fix'n'Protect as a primer/base coat before colour. This creates a bonding layer that significantly improves adhesion and wear time.

Problem 4: Bubbling or Wrinkling Gel

Cause: Gel applied too thickly. Thick layers can't cure evenly — the surface hardens while the gel underneath remains soft, causing it to wrinkle or form bubbles as it cures.

Fix: Always apply gel in thin, even layers. Two thin coats of Chroma Gel 1 Step Gel Polish will give better coverage than one thick one. Cure each layer fully before applying the next.

Problem 5: Gel Feels Tacky or Doesn't Cure Properly

Cause: Undercuring — your lamp may not be powerful enough, the bulbs may need replacing, or you're not curing for long enough.

Fix: Check your lamp's wattage and recommended cure times for gel polish. LED lamps typically cure gel in 30–60 seconds; UV lamps take 2 minutes or more. Cure times increase with pigmented or dark shades. Note: a slightly tacky surface after curing is normal (this is the inhibition layer) — it should wipe away with Gel Cleanser. If the gel feels soft or squishy underneath, it's undercured.

Problem 6: Chipping Within Days

Cause: No top coat, or a top coat that isn't compatible with your gel system. Not all top coats bond well with all gel polishes.

Fix: Always finish with a compatible top coat. Chroma Gel Polish Lock is formulated to work with the Chroma Gel system — it seals and protects colour, adds shine, and significantly extends wear. Apply generously, cap the edges, and cure.

Problem 7: Your Nails Are Naturally Oily

Some people produce more natural oils than others, and this makes gel adhesion genuinely harder. If you've fixed everything above and still struggle with wear, oily nails might be the issue.

Fix:

  • Use a dehydrating primer before Fix'n'Protect.
  • Wash your hands with soap, dry thoroughly, and apply gel promptly — don't let nails sit after cleansing.
  • Consider using Fix'n'Protect as both a primer and a base layer for extra adhesion.
  • Avoid hand cream and cuticle oil immediately before a gel manicure.

A Quick Checklist for Long-Lasting Gel Polish

  1. Push back cuticles and buff the nail surface.
  2. Cleanse with Gel Cleanser and don't touch afterwards.
  3. Apply Fix'n'Protect as a base coat and cure.
  4. Apply two thin coats of 1 Step Gel Polish, curing each layer.
  5. Seal with Polish Lock, capping the free edge.
  6. Cure fully and wipe with Gel Cleanser.
